AKPATA: UCC Condemns Reported Clash in UNIBEN, Calls for Thorough, Transparent and Impartial Investigation

The University of Benin Comrades’ Community (UCC) has expressed concern over the recent incident that took place at the Senior Staff Club on Friday, 12th of April, 2024 during the visit of the Governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the forthcoming Edo State Gubernatorial Election – Barrister Olumide Akpata.

A statement by the Secretary of UCC, Arigbe Victor, explained that the Body condemned in totality, any form of violence on Campus, noting that it was important for all to be peaceful at all times.

While stressing the need for tolerance, the Body also called for proper investigation to find out the remote cause of the Clash and bring perpetrators to book.

The statement read;

“The University of Benin Comrades’ Community (UCC) is issuing this statement to express our concern and disappointment regarding the recent incident that took place at the Senior Staff Club on Friday, 12th of April, 2024

“The incident, which occurred during a visit by Barrister Olumide Akpata, the Governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the forthcoming Edo state gubernatorial election, reportedly involved Students’ Union leaders and staff members and has prompted serious reflection within our Community

“As representatives of the Comrades body of the University of Benin, we strongly condemn any form of violence or confrontation on campus grounds. The safety and well-being of all students, as well as staff, are of utmost importance to us, and we are deeply troubled by the events that transpired during Barrister Akpata’s visit

“UCC recognizes the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. We are aware that an Investigation Committee has been set up by the University management. On that note, we call on the Committee to conduct a transparent and impartial inquiry to uncover the immediate and remote causes of the incident and hold those responsible accountable for their actions, either staff or students alike, without any form of partiality or victimization as everyone’s rights must be protected at all times

“It is imperative that all members of the University Community, including students, staff, and political actors, adhere to principles of peaceful coexistence, respect, and mutual understanding. We must strive to uphold the values of tolerance and dialogue, even in the face of disagreement, strong provocation or differing opinions

“Moving forward, the UNIBEN Comrades’ Community is committed to working collaboratively with the University Management, Students’ organizations and other relevant stakeholders to promote a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and non-violence on Campus. We will actively engage in efforts to foster positive relationships and constructive communication channels among all members of our Community

“As we navigate through these challenging times, we urge all students to remain united and focused on their shared goal of Academic excellence and personal growth. Let us not forget the last stanza of the anthem of our great citadel of learning,Â

“God bless this our noble school

“As we bid peace to reign

May we have no cause to mournÂ

But rejoice in gains achieved

We hope for a place a man will

Bring brain and brawn to build self still

Arise mighty UNIBEN!!!
