Dangote: Host Community Condemns Kogi Govt. Attack On Workers To Seal Off Cement Factory Over Equity Share

0

Members of host communities of the Dangote Cement Factory, Obajana in Kogi State has condemned Kogi State Government for invading the factory complex and attacking workers.

The Corporate Communication Department of the factory confirmed the attack, alleged that it was at the instance of the Kogi State Government following a resolution by Kogi State House of Assembly to shut down the factory over equity share and request for submission of relevant documents that back up its operations and ownership structure, especially the transition from Kogi Cements to Dangote Cements.

According to reports which claimed anonymity, no fewer than seven staff of Dangote Cement, Obajana in Kogi state were shot and several others injured as over 500 armed members of the state’s security outfit, the Vigilantes, stormed the cement factory in the early hours of today.

The House after its investigation into the Cement factory’s operation allegedly revealed that no valid acquisition took place for the company.

KogiOnlineNg also gathered that the Chairman of the company, Aliko Dangote refused to appear before the House upon invitation for questioning over what was paid and document for acquisition.

Meanwhile, members of the mining and host communities have condemned the Kogi State Government for what they described as extra-judicial and unlawful deployment of the vigilantes to cause chaos in the Obajana community.

Sources privy to KogiOnlineNg revealed that vigilante’s group were led by the state Director-General of Lands, Nasir Ochi ; Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Bashir Gegu; Special Adviser to the Government on Security Matters, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd); Chairman of Kabba/Bunnu LGA, Moses Olorunleke; Chairman of Ijumu LGA, and the State ALGON Chairman, Alh. Taofeeq Isa; Senior Special Assistant on Job Creation, Mr. Dele Iselewa and Chairman of Lokoja LGA, Alh. Mohammed Dansabe.

The vigilante group members were said to be wielding arms of different kinds including local and assorted rifles as residents and passersby scamper for safety.

The External Solicitor of Dangote Cement Company, Mr. Leeman Salihu, had submitted some documents, which are a Certificate of Incorporation and an agreement signed in 2002 and 2003 but craved the indulgence of the House to allow other discussions on the issue to be out of the public glare.

He pleaded that the House should allow the company to engage in further conversation with it and the state economic team. The request was, however, declined.

Mr. David Oluruntoba, spokesman for the Oyo Mining host community described the act as primitive and disgraceful, saying the youths of the community can never be used, and will not take part in such ‘evil practices’.

He said: “They called us to join them. But I told them that the company has not offended us. We just signed a Community Development Agreement (CDA) and the company has been helping us and providing us with jobs. What has the government done for us, nothing. There is no basis to support the government.”

Speaking in the same vein, the spokesman for Iwaa mining community, Rotimi Kekereowo said: “We would never support government on this matter. What have they done for us? We don’t have a single political appointment at the State level. Even when we have problems of electricity and flooding, it was Dangote that was helping us. So, I want to repeat it. We will never support them.”

Speaking also, the Olu of Akpata, Fredrick Balogun said he was never contacted and as such cannot justify the unwarranted invasion.

“We are royal fathers, and we will continue to seek the path of reconciliation and amicable resolution of any misunderstanding. We don’t have issues with the company,” he charged.

Mathew Ojonuga, a resident said important issue like flooding in the state which has rendered many homeless has not been attended to only to be chasing private companies that have been providing us with means of livelihood.

Said he ”the state governor should face the issue of flooding and let the people live in peace. If there are issues, let him employ dialogue and resolve it rather this kind of use of force.”

At the main gate, disagreement ensued between the thugs and the few policemen guarding the plant, as they shot sporadically into the air to disperse all staff and Communities members. By this time, the vigilantes have succeeded in locking both entrance and exit gates of the company with many workers stranded.

The State’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo when contacted said, ”pursuant to the constitutional authorities of the Kogi State House of Assembly, and upon petition by the people of Kogi State, an investigation was carried out on the acquisition of Obajana Cement Company by Dangote Company.

“It was found that no valid acquisition took place, as Dangote could not show evidence of what was paid as consideration for the acquisition.

“The Legislators invited the Chairman of the Company, Aliko Dangote, before the house for explanations but he failed to appear before the state Assembly, giving excuses.

The House has earlier directed the Commissioner of Police, the State Commandant of Civil Defence Corps, and the Head of Vigilante Group in the State to ensure the resolution was enforced.

The House insisted that Kogi State Cement company could not have been transferred to Obajana Cement Company and then Dangote Cement Company 100 per cent without any consideration.

“We just want to say, thank you for the good work you and your entire team has done for the People and workers of Kogi State. Our organization has been in existence for the past 16 years.

“We are majored in conducting annual independent secret investigations and budget tracking using the instrumentality of conducting opinion polls, interviews with informants, distribution of multiple questionnaires and project site visitation without the knowledge of our targeted subject of assessment to avoid influence on our work.

“We expose corruption where necessary, appreciating those responsible for helping to change the narratives of mis-governance and corruption in both public and private sectors of Nigeria economy Thus, complementing our fight against corruption with the building of capacity of citizens towards eliminating the course of corruption in Nigeria.

For Equity And Fairness, Okunland Should Produce The Next Governor Of Kogi State In 2024 – Dr. Bolufemi Rotimi

0

Astute businessman, philanthropist and Kogi State Governorship Aspirant, Dr. Bolufemi Rotimi in an interview session with News Hounds in Lokoja has declared that for equity and fairness, the next Governor of Kogi State should be an Okun person.

He contends that, considering the fact that the state has several ethnic groups, power rotation should be entrenched for inclusiveness and fairness. This idea of rotation has formed part and parcel of what is obtainable in most states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Dr. Bolufemi posited that since the creation of Kogi State in 1991, Kogi East has had stints for 16 uninterrupted years in the governance of the state, while Kogi Central would have had 8 years at the expiration of the tenure of Alhaji Yahaya Bello in 2024.

There is therefore the need to correct the imbalances in the polity by allowing Kogi West at helm of affairs in Kogi State.

Every patriotic Kogite must of necessity, and irrespective of tribe and religion support this agitation for an Okun person to be the next Governor of Kogi state.

Bolu pointed out that, using the moral indices of all religions as a guide, Okunland should produce the next Governor of Kogi state. The lopsidedednes of the occupation of the governorship seat, he said, must end for harmony and peace to reign supreme in the state.

Dr. Bolufemi Rotimi is of the opinion that, it is morally wrong for anyone from any other part of the State apart from Okun land, to nurture a gubernatorial ambition in view of the obvious unfairness in the power equation in the State as it is presently the case.

Taking a cursory look at the ‘EBIGO’ principle as espoused by the present administration in Kogi state, Dr. Bolufemi believes it should be more than a mere slogan but a genuine effort to entrench equity and fairness in our leadership dynamics in Kogi state, especially the governorship seat.

With an Okun person emerging as Governor of the State in 2024, Dr. Bolufemi Rotimi said, *he is optimistic that the final nail on marginalisation would have been struck*

Ibaji Unity Forum Solicits Governments’ Intervention To Ameliorate Suffering of Flood Victims

0

Ibaji (Kogi), Oct. 2022

The Ibaji Unity Forum (IUF), an umbrella body for people of Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi, has appealed to the Federal and State Governments for urgent intervention to ameliorate the peoples’ suffering emanated from flooding.

The President of IUF, Barr. Stephen Uchola, made the appeal on Tuesday after he led officials of the organisation to visit some affected communities in Ibaji.

He urged the Federal and Kogi Governments to urgently take necessary steps to rescue thousands of people trapped in different communities in the area due to the ravaging flood disaster.

He said that since the outbreak of the devastating flood that has submerged the entire local government and rendered the residents homeless, there had not been any assistance from the government and its agencies for the victims.

Uchola said that many of the victims were in danger of losing their lives as they were sick without drugs, food and shelter.

He added that many had remained trapped in their communities as all the roads in the local government had been taken over by the flooding.

Flooded Houses
Flooded Houses

“What we saw at various places we visited has necessitated this urgent call on the various arms of government, non-governmental organizations, philanthropists and donor agencies to come to the aid of the victims.

”They have lost everything to the flood and are battling to survive the disaster.

“We visited some communities on Monday and Tuesday, and will continue on Wednesday to cover the entire ten wards in Ibaji LGA.

According to him, all the ten wards which include: Onyedega, Iyano, Ujeh, Ayah, Ojila, Odeke, Akpanyo, Unale, Ejule and Analo have been devastated by flood.

He added: ”Dangerous reptiles have taken over the flooded houses and it’s dangerous.

“Six deaths have been reported so far.

”At Aniocha in Ojila Ward, a 3-year-old child fell into the river and died. The casualty figure is low because many of our people can swim.

“As we speak thousands of them including the children are sick, stranded and eager to leave the area but they cannot do so because the volunteers using wooden boats to evacuate them can’t do much.

”Having lost their source of livelihood they are now helpless and praying for relief assistance especially food, drugs, clothing and shelter.

”If these are not provided urgently, from what we experienced, many will not survive this harsh condition.

“Unfortunately, those already evacuated to Idah town and some neighbouring states are also suffering and are finding it difficult to cope with some of them wearing one dress since they were rescued from their flooded communities some days back.

”Many of them have no place to sleep. Their condition is very pathetic and they are crying for help”.

He, therefore called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to urgently intervene and evacuate the victims to safe places and provide the much needed support in the local government.

He noted some members of the organisation and public-spirited individuals had made donations towards assisting the victims.

He, however said that the donations were not enough to alleviate the suffering of the people and mitigate the impact of the disaster on the communities.

“We are sending this Save-Our-Soul message to President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Yahaya Bello as well as NEMA to come to the rescue of our people.

”These people cannot help themselves under the present circumstances and their survival now depends on support from the government and donors. They should not abandon us in this time of difficulty,” Uchola appealed.

He further appealed to members of the public and kind-hearted individuals willing to assist the victims to do so by making donations through the following:

Account Number: 1021327134,
United Bank of Africa, UBA
Account Name: Ibaji Unity Forum, or contact the following leaders of the organization:
Barr. Stephen Ugbeda James Uchola (President) – 08034926348; and Engr. Akoje Henry (Secretary General) – 08133941775.
