Gov. Ahmed Ododo of Kogi has approved the sum of N316 million for disbursement as Bursary for 8,750 undergraduate students of the state who have been successfully cleared.
The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mr Wemi Jones, disclosed at a press conference on Friday in Lokoja.
Jones said that out of over 40,000 undergraduate students that applied online for the 2024 Bursary Award, only 8,750 have completely uploaded the required documents and had been verified.
He explained further that out of the 8,750 students, 8,549 would get N30,000 each totaling 256 millon, while the remaining 201 who are Law students would receive N300,000 each totaling N60.3 million.
The commissioner assured that the beneficiaries would start getting alert within the next two weeks.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the present administration under Gov. Ododo’s leadership to continue to prioritize education and reduce the number of out of school children to the barest minimum in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that commissioner also presented a complementary Cheque of N5 million to Miss. Favour Oluwatimilehin Adebayo, a Kogi indigene who is currently on scholarship studying in Poland.
The commissioner said that the governor had graciously approved the disbursement of N5 million to the awardee for making the state proud by winning the European Union Erasmus+ Scholarship to study in Poland.
Jones, while presenting the N5 million cheque to the father of the awardee, Mr Moses Adebayo, on behalf of the governor, said the N5 million is to complement the scholarship award given to her by the European union.
In his remarks, Mr. Afolabi Joseph-Raji, the Executive Chairman, Kogi State Scholarship Board (KSSB), commended the governor for his commitment to education development in the state through various scholarship awards.
Joseph-Raji noted that Miss Favour had won a scholarship as best overall student while studying at the Nasarawa State University in 300 Level through an exchange program with Poland.
He said the presented fund would complement her tuition and accommodation scholarship fund and other areas of need.
Joseph-Raji reiterated the state government’s commitment through the Board to ensure that every Kogi student, attains academic success and become responsible.
In his response, Favour ‘s father, Mr. Moses Adebayo,vexpressed his gratitude to the Governor for the gesture towards her daughter, assuring that she would continue to make the state proud.
